Seto Ware

Seto Ware

The pottery so loved that its name became the word for “pottery.”

In Japan, the everyday word for ceramics is setomono — literally, “things from Seto.” No other pottery town in Japan has ever been honored like that. To say “Seto” is to say “pottery” itself.

Seto, in Aichi Prefecture, is one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, firing without pause for nearly a thousand years. But it holds a distinction even among those six: while most ancient kilns made rough, unglazed stoneware, Seto was the one place in medieval Japan that mastered glaze. Its potters drew on Chinese techniques to coat their wares in lustrous ash, iron, and feldspar glazes — pottery so refined it was bought by the imperial capital and the great temples. Later, Seto became one of the first towns in Japan to make porcelain too, which is why it remains one of the rare places that makes both stoneware and porcelain side by side.

That is Seto’s gift: range. A thousand years of learning every glaze, every clay, every form — and still making pieces for the table today.

So here is the question. You can own pottery from anywhere. Or you can own a piece from the town whose name an entire nation uses to mean “ceramic.” The choice below is yours.

      For the Moments You Value

      You Deserve More Than Ordinary

Ultimately it’s your choice. You can fill your home with objects that mean nothing, flawless, identical, and forgettable. Or you can choose something that reflects who you are.

The handcrafted products of Japan Classic are not perfect—and that is the point.
