Denshotouen: Handmade Japanese Tableware and How to Choose It

Most of the Denshotouen pieces sold here trace to Saga, Japan, with a smaller share from Shiga, Japan. The catalog leans toward pieces you would use daily at the table: rice bowls, teacups, and mugs, rather than large serving ware.

Rice bowls in two sizes

Denshotouen rice bowls run generally between about 4.8cm and 5.8cm tall, depending on the piece. One example is this yellow round rice bowl, 5.2cm tall, made in Saga, Japan and finished in Japanese porcelain, sized for a single portion rather than a shared dish.

Teacups run taller

The Yunomi-style teacups from the same workshop run taller than the rice bowls above, from about 7.7cm to 8.4cm, a shape built to hold tea rather than rice.

Cups, saucers and mugs by color

Denshotouen also makes cups outside the rice bowl and teacup shapes. This pink porcelain coffee cup and saucer carries a flower pattern across both pieces, a set meant to be used together rather than separately.
