Kikaku Pottery: Handmade Japanese Tableware and How to Choose It

Kikaku Pottery pieces at Japan Classic are almost all made in Saga, Japan, and nearly all of them are built for close-up use: small plates, cups, and single dishes rather than large serving pieces. That scale is the easiest way to think about the range.

Material first

Kikaku Pottery pieces come in two materials: Pottery (ceramic) and Porcelain, with a smaller group marked Japanese porcelain. One porcelain example is this gold glaze floral dish in a hexagonal shape, 9.2cm by 7.6cm and 2cm tall. The hexagonal edge and gold glaze keep the piece compact, sized to sit in the hand rather than the middle of a table.

Pottery (ceramic) pieces from the same maker include this blue floral small plate, standing about 3cm tall, and a plainer red cup for daily tea or coffee rather than display.

Sizing by shape

The range spans Plate, Small Plate / Mini Dish and Medium Plate at the larger end, down to Cup, Bowl, Small Bowl and Cutlery for individual settings. This red cup keeps the same small-format sizing as the two plates above, built for one hand rather than a shared table.

Prices across the collection run from $10.28 to $77.00, roughly following size: small dishes and cups toward the low end, plates and bowls toward the top.
