The carving on this cup runs around the outside wall only — ofukei, an exterior-facing technique — leaving the interior smooth for the coffee itself. Hyozan Kiln works in Gifu; the saucer is cut with a matching ring to seat the cup's foot.

Hyozan Kiln
Hyozan Kiln traces its history to the Momoyama period. One story holds that it presented ware to Oda Nobunaga, whose praise for the work led to it receiving the Hashiba surname. Its range spans an original technique called sabi kairagi, along with kohiki, mishima, akae (red enamel), and Chosen Karatsu. Each piece has a clean, slim shape that stacks neatly, keeping the cupboard tidy — a practical touch.
・Handmade — One by One
Every piece from Japan Classic is formed and fired entirely by hand, in small quantities, one at a time.
These handcrafted works carry slight variations in shape, weight, and surface, bearing the subtle marks of true craftsmanship rather than mass production.
・Living Glaze
On glazed pieces, you will find fine crackle patterns—known in Japan as kannyu (貫入)—naturally created as the glaze cools after firing.
This delicate finish evolves with time, reflecting the quiet beauty found in wabi-sabi ceramics.
・Elegance
Inspired by Japan’s timeless aesthetic, every piece by Japan Classic blends tradition with modern versatility.
Whether for rice, soups, or shared plates, these refined tablewares are designed for everyday beauty, maintaining their grace in both Eastern and Western settings.
