Hozan Kiln
A thin iron blade is held against clay turning on the wheel. It chatters — skipping, catching, skipping again — and leaves a ring of small, even notches behind it. This is tobikanna, the chatter mark, and it is what every piece from Hozan Kiln carries. The technique looks simple and is not. The blade has to bounce rather than cut, which means the wheel speed, the moisture in the clay, and the angle of the hand all have to agree with one another. Too slow and the marks blur into one another. Too fast and the tool digs in and tears.
・Handmade — One by One
Every piece from Japan Classic is formed and fired entirely by hand, in small quantities, one at a time.
These handcrafted works carry slight variations in shape, weight, and surface, bearing the subtle marks of true craftsmanship rather than mass production.
・Living Glaze
On glazed pieces, you will find fine crackle patterns—known in Japan as kannyu (貫入)—naturally created as the glaze cools after firing.
This delicate finish evolves with time, reflecting the quiet beauty found in wabi-sabi ceramics.
・Elegance
Inspired by Japan’s timeless aesthetic, every piece by Japan Classic blends tradition with modern versatility.
Whether for rice, soups, or shared plates, these refined tablewares are designed for everyday beauty, maintaining their grace in both Eastern and Western settings.
