Shinichi Kotsuji, working in Mie, fires this bowl with natural wood ash — the glaze colouring from pale grey to warm straw depending on where the ash settled in the kiln. No two firings produce the same result, and the bowl carries the particular story of its single firing.
Shinichi Kotsuji is based in Mie, Japan. Each bowl is firing by hand from start to finish — shaped, glazed, and fired individually, with the rim and surface given the same care as the overall form.
Japanese ceramics have been treasured across the world for generations, and a piece like this brings that living tradition to your own table.

Because each piece is individually made, slight variations in form and glaze are the mark of a true handmade object.
・Handmade — One by One
Every piece from Japan Classic is formed and fired entirely by hand, in small quantities, one at a time. No two are ever exactly alike.
These handcrafted works carry slight variations in shape, weight, and surface, bearing the subtle marks of true craftsmanship rather than mass production.
・Living Glaze
On glazed pieces, you will find fine crackle patterns—known in Japan as kannyu (貫入)—naturally created as the glaze cools after firing.
This delicate finish evolves with time, reflecting the quiet beauty found in wabi-sabi ceramics.
・Elegance
Inspired by Japan’s timeless aesthetic, every piece by Japan Classic blends tradition with modern versatility.
Whether for rice, soups, or shared plates, these refined tablewares are designed for everyday beauty, maintaining their grace in both Eastern and Western settings.
